Consideration for allowing 3A team tennis to participate in UIL.
(This was the proposal that was presented to the council in October)
The Texas Tennis Coaches Association has been sponsoring and supporting 3A Team Tennis for over 25 years. In those years 3A tennis has seen huge growth in numbers of schools participating. In the past, 3A schools shared many athletes, and many thought that the numbers would be too small to have 3A UIL Team Tennis. Times have changed and with increased participation and the addition of many 4A schools dropping to 3A the numbers have grown quickly. Many 4A schools that played UIL tennis were surprised that 3A team tennis was not directly governed by the UIL, but by the TTCA instead. Many of those coaches, along with long time 3A coaches, are now requesting that the UIL govern 3A team tennis. As of 2011 there are 192 schools that are playing sports in class 3A. The TTCA 3A Regional tournaments have averaged about 90-100 teams throughout the state of Texas. We are confident that if 3A Team Tennis goes UIL, the numbers will increase. Many schools have budgeted money for 3A team tennis to be played. Under the current financial conditions some schools are not allowing their teams to participate on the grounds that it is not governed by the UIL. Some of these schools were once 4A schools. The TTCA has always been about student participation and this news has caused us to act quickly and ask the UIL to govern 3A team tennis. If 3A team tennis is governed by the UIL participation in tennis in Texas will increase!
The TTCA is asking the UIL to study the possibility of adding 3A Team Tennis into the UIL. We thank you for your consideration in this very important matter.
