Wink Captures TTCA 2A and Under State Team Tennis Championship

By James Hill

ABILENE - The Wink Wildcats won the Texas Tennis Coaches Association 2A and Under State Team Tennis Championship at Rose Park Tennis Center.

Wink took the title from last year’s champion, the Sonora Broncos, by a score of 7-3. In the 2025 event, Wink was edged by Sonora 6-7 in the quarterfinals. All of the boys matches went to super-tiebreakers.

“We came out and we felt like this was the year to go and take it,” said Wink fourth-year head coach Brooke Carman. “This year, we came back into it, hoping to be where we are now. They have been working hard. Last year I felt a lot of your problems were with the mental battle of some close matches. Throughout the tournament we did a lot of really good things and I;m really proud of the kids!”

The road to the title was not easy, by any means. The teams split boys doubles, Wink won girls doubles, and Sonora took the mixed doubles event.

Boys singles was also tough for both squads. Wink senior Justin Lara, named the Wilson Boys MVP, won a hard-fought battle at No. 1 singles 3-6, 6-1, (10-8) over Sonora’s Lane Perez. Beau Blackbird of Sonora outlasted Hunter Guynes 3-6, 6-4, (10-7) on the second line.

Lara also teamed up with Guynes in No. 1 doubles as the match went to a super-tiebreaker.

Senior Lailah Solis of Wink won both of her singles and doubles matches and was selected as the Wilson Girls MVP.

The clincher for the Wildcats came at No. 3 girls singles with Brinley Baker winning the pairing.

Wink beat Utopia, last year’s third-place winner, by a score of 7-4 in the semifinals. Sonora was a 7-3 winner over Crawford in the semis. Crawford went on to take third place by a score of 6-3 over Utopia.
